German Fernandez - 3:56.50!

Oklahoma State freshman, German Fernandez, set the Junior World Record in the mile in his first ever indoor meet! Fernandez ran 3:56.50 for first place. The previous record was 3:59.6 by Jim Ryan, set in 1966. The collegiate record is 3:55.0.

It seems that this race was just a preview of what to expect from Fernandez as he was more or less experimenting with this race, "We just went out there to have fun." If he is training to peak during the outdoor season we can expect blazing times in the 1500 meters and 5,000 meters races come May and June.
