It Starts With A Nice, Deep Breath

It's that time of year when getting out the door to run is most challenging. It's dark, cold, windy and uncomfortable. When there is snow on the ground, it becomes dangerous to take one step after the other. Ice, forget about it! The cold makes the roads hard and the snow makes the trails impossible.

If it's available to you, running on a treadmill takes care of such issues. You can run in shorts in a warm climate, with no wind or snow or bitter cold. Perfect solution, except for one thing, BOREDOM! It can get pretty boring running on a treadmill, especially if it's in your basement or a place where no one is around.

If you are dedicated and want nothing more than to overcome such distractions and put in those winter miles, you'll find a way. Let me help you get started!

Take in a nice, deep breath and hold it for a moment...
Good, now slowly let it all out...
Try that again, take in a nice, deep breath and hold it for a moment...
Good, now slowly let it all out...
Great, one more time, take in a nice, deep breath and hold it for a moment...
Now slowly let it all out...

Now, the next time you take in a nice, deep breath, but not yet,
close your eyes as you slowly let it out...
With your eyes closed, I wonder if you can imagine what you will be like, as a runner,
at the end of your track season. What will you look like? What will you feel like?
What will you have accomplished?

So go ahead and take that nice, deep breathe, hold it, slowly let it out and close your eyes...

How was that?

Did you set a personal record in your event?
Were you beating your Conference rivals?
Were you a Conference or State Champion?
Did you look and feel strong and confident?

Whatever you imagined, whatever you pictured in your minds eye, you have control over.
You control it by what you do from now until then. Getting out that door or on that treadmill and putting in those miles, right now, will help make those images become a reality for you.

So whenever you are having trouble taking that first step this winter, all you have to do is close your eyes and revisit that place you want to be at the end of the track season. All you have to do is start with a nice, deep breath...
