Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

In today's Chicago Marathon, Adriana Pirtea, of Romania, had a large lead coming into the home stretch. She celebrated in the last 400 meters by waving to the crowd, unaware that Berhane Adere, from Ethiopia, was putting on a tremendous kick. By the time Pirtea realized what was happening, it was to late, Adere blew by her for the win. When asked in the press conference what happened, she responded by saying that no one in the crowd let her know that Adere was coming on. She went on to say that she would have run faster if she new (and probably would have won).
Lesson learned; always be aware of what is going on around you in a race. Even if you think you have the race won, check your surroundings to make sure!
Full coverage of the women's, and men's, race can be reviewed at The Final Sprint.
