When cross country courses are not measured accurately, it causes confusion for the runners, coaches and spectators. A good article regarding this topic is at OHRunners. This brings up a debatable question; If all courses are measured properly, should they also be a standard distance? For example, if the 5k distance was the standard and all courses were to be properly measured as so, would this make ranking runners and teams easier? Would it be easier to track your progress throughout the year? Yes, all courses are different (hills, flat, tough terrain, etc...) but the distance doesn't have to be. Does it?
